UK Introduces AI Trials in Courts to Reduce Backlogs, Speed Up Justice System
The pilot program includes AI-powered legal assistants designed to support lawyers and court staff by handling routine tasks such as legal research and case evaluation. These tools are being developed with input from legal experts and AI developers, alongside upgraded digital case management systems intended to improve the flow of cases through the courts.
Before being introduced into Crown Courts, the systems will undergo testing in controlled environments under strict safety and ethical standards, ensuring compliance with judicial expectations and professional requirements.
In parallel, judges are expected to trial separate AI systems that can help identify cases ready for trial and group similar hearings together, with the aim of improving efficiency and better allocating court resources.
UK Deputy Prime Minister David Lammy described artificial intelligence as a transformative tool for governance and public services, stating: "Artificial intelligence has the power to transform how we live, work, and govern for the better," and adding: "This impact for good can be seen in our justice system – with thousands of days of admin work saved for our probation staff, and the advent of new tools which aim to cut court backlogs and deliver swifter justice for victims,"
Separately, probation officers across England and Wales have already been issued an AI transcription system known as Justice Transcribe, which automatically records and converts spoken interactions with offenders into written reports, significantly reducing administrative workload. Officials estimate the system could save the equivalent of 18,750 working days annually.
A similar transcription and automation system is also being tested in immigration and asylum tribunals, with the possibility of wider implementation across the UK court and tribunal network in the future.
